Synopsis

One and a half million Americans will hear the words “you have cancer” for the first time this year. Thanks to advances in early detection and treatment many will survive and join the ranks of over 10 million who are already considered survivors. However, the toll taken by both cancer and its treatment leaves many facing challenges far greater than mere survival. AWAKEN THE DRAGON, a 90 minute documentary, examines how one small group of cancer survivors is facing these challenges with the courage and ferocity of an immortal creature. Filmmaker Liz Oakley introduces us to an unlikely crew who have found an unconventional path to wellness through the ancient Chinese sport of dragon boating.  Through a stunning array of colors and sounds, nail-biting competition, and intimate revelations the film takes viewers on a journey of hope and healing.
