Nonfiction doc music will be honored for the first time this year, thanks to the work of longtime composer Miriam Cutler ('Love, Gilda'), who reveals her pitch to the organization and how scoring a doc differs from scoring fiction.
For years, music in documentary and nonfiction programming competed alongside the music for fictional narratives, but this year, music composition for a documentary series or special is getting its own category — the Emmys’ seventh music category overall. It is a change that couldn’t have come soon enough for many veterans in the space.

Lisa D’Apolito’s documentary, Love Gilda, is a loving portrait of a woman who never expected to be famous and only wanted to make the world a more beautiful place through humor. Miriam Cutler is nominated for writing the score to Gilda’s life (she’s also nominated for RBG, and both films were executive produced by CNN Films), and it’s a gentle tribute to a legend.
Quartet Records and MovieScore Media presents the CD release of Miriam Cutler: Film Music, which features selections from 18 different movies, most of which have no commercial release on CD. The cues were personally selected by the composer to reflect on the many different projects from her career as a documentary composer.
