THE NEW MISS ALICE STONE LADIES SOCIETY ORCHESTRA/ BLA BLA CAFE
Variety

Six-member femme musical ensemble, The New Miss Alice Stone Ladies Society Orchestra, offers both wit and lively music, loosely tied, but not overbearingly so, to a feminist theme. Although group may have to start traveling with its own marquee to handle its moniker, outfit is an obvious crowd pleaser at the nonmarqueed Bla Bla, where it puts in regular weekend stints.

Much of the material is of the Dixieland and ragtime genre, some authentically so, others original, but authentically flavored. Group, which parades on stage a la New Orleans, playing everything from tuba to washboard, mugs along in an appropriate spirit, with a lead warbler more than vaguely reminiscent of Maria Muldaur. Musicianship is just as mood setting as the thrift shop selections from the Dixieland days all members wear. Outfit returns the first two Fridays in April.
